All of that to lead into this...
Many preachers will deliver their sermons today. Many will honor mothers and some will not. My aim today is to honor God and his motherly, nurturing way. We talk about God as father. The Bible uses this pronoun for God. I would hope that all Christians could be honest enough with themselves to accept two truths. 1) God does not require gender, nor does God inhabit a Gender. 2).Since we are made in the image of God, both male and female (Genesis 1:27), then women are the image of God just as much as men. We get mixed up in all of the male pronouns that we begin to make God in our image (mostly male) instead of the other way round. God is father. Yes. God is mother too!
If you want to honor mothers and the women in your life that have used their gift of femininity to bless you and others, then reflect the fact that they too are the full image of God, not some subservient image of God. Please do not accept the lie that women are only here for men to have some other homo sapien to rule over. Women aren't on earth simply to be the second piece for reproduction. Women are not on earth only to serve and do the things we men cannot or do not want to do. Women are the image of God on this Earth to give glory back to God and fulfill the mission of the kingdom. When you read Proverbs 31, don't emphasize that women cook and shop for clothes. They provide for their families, they give to the poor and needy. Women of Proverbs 31 make room for God to enter this Earth and with a gentle push bring others to the kingdom.
In return God is not simply father. God is mother. While I understand that their are fundamental differences between men and women. Physically, emotionally, psychologically, and in other ways men and women are different. God exhibits the fullness of both genders in their humanity and then goes beyond doing what only the divine can do. Can I be bold enough to say that if your God is only a man...you lose! Sure, you can still go to heaven, but you will miss the fullness of the enjoyment of this world and the work we have been allowed to participate here on Earth.
Honor your mother today!
Honor Mother God today too!
Oh and honor Mother God EVERY day!!
