In South Texas there is a small town called Egypt. It may not mean much to you, but it has meaning for me. They say everything is bigger in Texas...but it isn't. The community of Egypt, TX consists of around 43 people. That's right, the entire population of this town can fit on one school bus. Why am I talking about Egypt, TX? It's probably not the major influence for a state of over 28 million people. If you blink as you drive through you will miss it. Egypt isn't even that unique for a name since there is also a town/city called Egypt in: AL, AR, GA, ID, IN, KY, ME, MA, MS, NY, NC, OH, PA, TN, TX, VT, and WV. In fact, it is not even the only Egypt in Texas. Egypt, TX is not leading the world or even the state in technological advances or political engagement. So, again, why Egypt, TX?
In 1827 before Texas would declare its independence a community of Texas changed its name to Egypt. Before this community was named Egypt it was called, "Mercer's Crossing." And now you know why it means something to me. In my direct genealogy Eli Mercer owned farming land and did really well. In 1826 it was known as Mercer's Crossing and by 1827 a difficult drought had hit the area. Eli Mercer was the only one who had a bumper crop and people from all over were being told to go to..."Egypt" to get corn. Based out of the idea from Genesis 42:1-3 the name stuck. Eli Mercer made his mark in Texas History. (click here). This is part of my physical, earthly genealogy and legacy.
However, there is more to me than what happened within my family line. I have a spiritual legacy also. And one day I will leave behind a spiritual legacy. This year our church is working through the theme and focus of the idea of a Legacy. Everything that I preach will have this foundation. I am not promoting living in the past. Rather I am promoting knowing where we come from, where we are, and where are we going.
