Giving Up is Hard to do

Yesterday was Ash Wednesday.  Ash Wednesday kicks off the Lenten season.  This season is a 40 day period of reflection and sacrifice to prepare our hearts for the Easter event, where our greatest victory as Christians has occurred, Jesus' resurrection.  Different branches of Christendom celebrate this period in different ways.  I come from a heritage that was born from the American pioneer movement whose closest link to Britain was Presbyterianism and some Puritanism.  However, we chose to leave behind our "high church" ways in order to be free from the legalism that so easily entangles and to be free from governing bodies.  We are autonomous and informal with our worship and we lack substantial liturgies.  Now, before you jump your ship and sail to our perfect-looking waters, you must know that even in our greatest efforts we lost sight of our original goals and went through the same struggles that all denominations, churches, groups of people go through.  However, through some of this free-church upbringing we lost sight of some significant celebrations that the church has held since the first church.

One of those is Lent.  As I celebrate it now with my current church, I celebrate it as a time of sacrifice and renewal.  I sacrifice something that in my "normal" life is consistent with what I do or who I am.  Usually this is a dietary item, but I have also tried the technological realm as well (I gave up facebook, blogging, and email for 40 days one year).  The sacrifice helps remind me that God is bigger than my wants or my needs.  That I should rely on God for all that I am and want to be.  It also reminds me that the world cannot promise me anything, only God's promises are eternal.

Renewal comes in different ways.  Sometimes people choose to not only sacrifice something from their daily routine, but also pick up a new habit that is a spiritual exercise.  Maybe they choose to say Psalm 23 every day or say the Lord's Prayer.  They might also choose to use the money they save from buying a coke every day to put towards mission efforts.  Either way they are renewing their commitment through a physical activity.  Renewal also comes through humility, prayer, and meditation.  We can use the 40 days to really ponder how God wants to use us for His kingdom purposes.

The season of Lent is a journey of sacrifice and renewal that when practiced grows us to be more like Christ and a stronger force for the kingdom.  Giving up things is hard to do.  What will you give up these next 40 days?

Met w/my spiritual director today and we talked about the next 38 days accompanying Jesus to Jerusalem (he intentionally turned his eyes toward Jerusalem...his death) in tandem with my theme for 2011: pursuing trusting God and peace. She reminded me that Lent is about joy which makes me think of James 1:1-3 (Message) "Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don't try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way." Blessed journeying, Michael

God Is... -God is... is a book that takes a look at Genesis and portrays six true images of God.  There are many ways we think about God that are unhealthy and even destructive.  These six images help turn our attention to who God really is and how we might follow him more closely.  Click the Lulu button below to download your copy!
