My Papaw

Two Weeks ago I was honored to officiate the funeral for my Papaw.  Here are the words below that I said.

My Papaw

I called him Peepaw, Papaw, and Pops.  He was really the only grandpa I ever knew.  He was the best grandpa any of us could had ever had.  He wasn’t one of those grandpas who got on the floor to roll cars around with you or sit a small table and fumble around with a toy tea set.  He didn’t do art or sing in a choir. And he certainly didn’t try his hand at the latest fashion.

He did work hard.  He did provide for his family.  He did laugh a lot. He did fish and hunt and say a curse word every now and then. Ok more now than then.  And He did what was ever necessary to take care of his family.  One of my fondest memories of Papaw was when he would come through Bay City and pick up Wyatt and me and go to Hinton’s grocery and buy each of us an orange Pushup.  Or the time in college whenever I came to visit he would buy me an ice cream or a burger in front of his afternoon coffee buddies, just to prove he wasn’t too cheap.  He would tell us jokes and sayings that aren’t so appropriate for a younger crowd.  And we would always say to us, “Here I sit fat and chunky, ate six cats and swallowed a monkey.”  And we would laugh and laugh.  It’s not easy to put down all the memories in such a short time, so I will sum it up this way.  Here are the things that I knew about Peepaw, Papaw, Pops through the things that he said and did:

1.    Work is important –He worked hard and even when he retired he found new things to keep him working. Like his garden

2.    Recreation is important –He loved to fish and hunt and simply be outside

3.    Laughter is important –I can hardly think of an image of Papaw where he wasn’t laughing or trying to make someone else laugh

4.    Integrity is important –Pops didn’t really worry to much about how people thought of him.  And basically he didn’t have to, because he respected himself and he respected others and he was full of great character

5.    He was Big –He was a big man, not just in size, but in every aspect of his life.  He had a big heart, He had a big laugh, and he was a big leader.  He filled his life with things that made all of his family want to listen, to follow, and to love him

Peepaw, Papaw, Pops.  Your grandkids and your great-grandkids love you with everything they have.  We will never have enough time to thank you and comprehend the influence you have been in our lives.  We will miss you and miss your laughter, your jokes, and your love.  But we are going to be okay.  All of us,  Memaw, Your kids, your grandchildren, your great-grandchildren, your brothers and sister, and all the relatives and friends you have left behind, we are going to be okay, because you have showed us a great way and given us so much of you.  And we will see you again.

I Love Church

At the beginning of this year I made a set of goals.  One of those goals was to write 30 blogs this year.  This blog marks #30.  I think I'll go way beyond 30 though.  Hopefully you stick with me.  On this "goal-meeting" blog I decided to write what is dearest to my heart.

I have been in church all my life.  In my 36 years I have been a regular member at only 2 churches.  The second church I was at for 17 years.  Including my employment at churches I have been a part of 7 churches.  The two I grew up in and 2 that I interned for during summers and then the 3 churches I have worked for as a full-time minister.  I say all of that to say this:  Church is extremely important to me.  Let me say that even more specifically:  The LOCAL church is extremely important to me.  The significance of the church comes from a deep rooted faith, a faithful and consistent church-going family, authentic faith relationships with other church members, intellectual study (including formal Christian education), the word of so many church fathers, the Bible, and my personal experience as a member and minister with the local congregation.  I love church!  I may not always agree with what a church does or even always like church.  But I have a deep, unconditional love for the local church.  I believe in the church.  I believe in it when it is flawed and I believe in it when it inspires beyond its perceived ability.  So I want to take this blog to share some thoughts on church.

Being a Dreamer

This blog post was inspired by Scott Belsky, the author of Making Ideas Happen.  I heard Scott at the Catalyst Conference in Dallas (2011).  Ever since I have been influenced by his profile of the three types of people in the creative process.  This blog is influenced by his presentation that day.  There is a 20 minute vimeo that is basically the same presentation that I saw at Catalyst.

I love to dream, envision, plan, and spend time thinking about what could be.  I'm a dreamer!  Dreaming and spending time casting vision is what gets me most excited.  I know that you don't have to reinvent the wheel, but it is almost impossible for me to do something just like someone else has done it.  I absolutely love the brainstorming session and throwing out ideas.  Then I will take those ideas and begin to dream big dreams with them.  It is who I am and it is what I do.  Even if the dreams never come to fruition, my joy was dreaming them in the first place.  Scott Belsky says there are 3 types of people:  Dreamers, Doers, and Incrementalists.  I heard him say that two years ago at a conference.  I was convinced that day and still am convinced that out of the three I'm the dreamer.

Dreaming is needed, but not at the expense of the other two types.  This blog is dedicated to dreaming.  God knows all about dreaming.  He dreamed up this Earth and all that is in it.  He dreamed up the entire creation.  And even when his dream was stained with the sin of man, He dreamed again.  His dream was always to offer a plan of love through redemption and restoration.  His dream has become our dream as well.  As much as God is a dreamer, He is infinite and even more than all three of these types.  I don't want to personify God and take away from his divinity, but we need to know that we get our traits from our Father.

When I create a sermon I first am dreaming.  I am thinking through all aspects of the main focus of that lesson.  Later I will edit those ideas, but first I am living in the dream.  I also begin dreaming about what this could mean for those hearing the message.  What could it mean for the church?  What does it mean for me and my journey?

Dreams are good and pure.  When you are dreaming, the dream always ends just like you envision it.  When you are casting a vision you are proclaiming what a particular thing or idea would be at its best.  Maybe that is why I love the dream so much.  Maybe that is why I'm a dreamer.  Because reality changes the dream.  The dream can come to a worse or greater end, but in the end the dream is just that; the dream.

Are you a dreamer?  Why do you love seeing the vision or the dream?

God Is... -God is... is a book that takes a look at Genesis and portrays six true images of God.  There are many ways we think about God that are unhealthy and even destructive.  These six images help turn our attention to who God really is and how we might follow him more closely.  Click the Lulu button below to download your copy!
