Prophetic Dreams

There are certain people throughout history that have changed our world.  Martin Luther King Jr. is one of those.  He spoke prophetic words and gave the world a new dream. His words, his actions, his life began to change the narrative of America and break down walls of racism and oppression.  By doing this he was actually carrying out the word and nature of God and calling all others to do the same.  And like prophets before him he was killed by those who needed the message the most.

In scripture we find many prophets who come before kings, judges, masses of people, and smaller groups to decree the word of God, call for change, and do it at the risk of their own lives.  To read about these prophets you will find that they call out greed, social injustice, idolatry, and rebellion.  They were given these prophecies through oral dictation from God, reading God's word, and dreams.

Dr. King had a dream.  It wasn't a dream during slumber, but rather a vision of what the world could become.  At the time some thought he was a lunatic, some spread rumors against his character, and others followed him wholeheartedly.  His dream, however, would flow into the hearts of our country and though still in process begin to change America from white and black to character and content.

Typically when I introduce teaching the prophets, I use some of Dr. King's speeches.  He was a prophet, not because he could see the future, but because he proclaimed truth even when it wasn't popular to do so.  His prophecy did change our country and brought Christians to a new realization about who the gospel included; everyone.

Dr. King's prophecy has endured through the years.  And since we haven't completely realized everything  he dreamed it will continue to endure.  The dream endures because we are on a journey and because it is true.  God spoke through biblical prophets, Martin Luther King Jr. and continues to speak today through others against racism and oppression. We that have ears, let us hear!

A Call to Weep

I have been pondering the situation in Arizona where the young man opened fire on several at a grocery store.  They were in line to see the Congresswoman Giffords.  As of writing this blog, six have been killed and 14 have been injured.  Among the fatalities are a 9 year old girl born on September 11, 2001, a District Judge, and a member of the church of christ (my heritage).  I think about those that have lost lives due to violence and those injured due to brute evil.  It pains me to think on these things and yet I am so far removed from the actual situation.  I have had my own times of grief through the years and there are several members of our family that are in ill health that will bring more grieving soon.

And when I grieve I will cry, moan, cry out to God, and pray fervently.  I will dip into my spirit of lament and find my God glorious.  I will read Psalm 88 (the only Psalm without any positive words or praise) and find comfort in it's tone and sadness.  I will not lose hope in God, but will anticipate Christ second coming.  And while the world may find this weak, blubbery, foolish, and infantile; God will dig into his own lament, touch my tears, feel my turmoil, and allow me to be in pain.

Tears and pain are not necessarily a negative thing.  Mourning is called on by God in scripture.  Hurting is part of the brokenness of life.  God is calling out back to us during our cry for help and absorbing our personal pain, mixing it with his Holy intent and creating a longing for home that is eternal and true.

May we learn how to grieve better than any other religion and as my friend in Ministry said the other day May we as Christians die better than anyone else because of our expectation of the true Messiah and just King.

When you find yourself in tragedy; cry today, cry tomorrow, and cry again.  And for those that have not seen tragedy yet, or are in between the brokenness of this world right now:  God is calling you to weep with those who weep and mourn with those who mourn.  Let your lament shout as loud as your praise, because God is God whether this life is great or whether this life is bleak.

Today, I mourn with the six families who lost loved ones to senseless violence and the fourteen and their families who have been injured.  I will mourn and I will weep and for them I will cry out Come Lord Jesus!

New Beginnings

I have never been one who has made New Year's resolutions.  However, I do understand the idea that the New Year brings new ideas, new resolves, and new beginnings.  Some people have had the worst year in their life and 2011 brings hope of a new start and a better year.  However, others have had one of the best years of their life and 2011 brings the expectation that life is going to be good again.

God was no stranger to New Beginnings.  He created and then created female.  He banished humanity from perfection, then began them on a new course of redemption.  He flooded the whole earth and then hit the restart button for the world.  He brought himself into the world through human form.  He then gave the ultimate new beginning by raising Jesus from the dead and establishing grace on earth.

I'm looking forward to 2011 and the new beginnings that God has in store for me, my family, and His church!  I really believe that his mercies are new every morning.  Every day brings a new way to worship God and serve others.

This isn't about what 2011 brings, it is about what God brings...every day!

God Is... -God is... is a book that takes a look at Genesis and portrays six true images of God.  There are many ways we think about God that are unhealthy and even destructive.  These six images help turn our attention to who God really is and how we might follow him more closely.  Click the Lulu button below to download your copy!
