Today is my Memaw's birthday. I have been so blessed to have a close relationship with Memaw my entire life. We would visit her often on weekends, every holiday, and stay with her and my pops for weeks during the summer. I cannot remember a time where she wasn't the best grandmother anyone could ever ask for in life. She stands 4 ft. 9 in. (5 ft. if she is wearing her heels and has her big hair done), but she is a giant of a woman. I won't forget the times when she went out of her way to keep one or more of her grandchildren at her house when they were down on their luck. I cannot forget how she constantly would come to visit me in Houston before I was married and fill my fridge with "real" groceries. She loved my pops, even though they showed it through passionate discussion that made the hard of hearing grateful. She loves her children and doesn't wait for them to come to her as much as she runs after each one. Her grands and great-grands have become a beacon of light to her soul and she delights in the Lord because of her 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. I won't tell her age but Herbert Hoover was president when she was born. She still drives, she still works, and lives on her own. Nothing holds her back.
The one thing that I have learned from Memaw that I will be eternally grateful for is unconditional love. Memaw may not like everything that her family has done, but that has never been a reason not to love them and shower them with that love. In her eyes you are never far from her love. It is the kind of love that Jesus gave and asks us to give. I have met very few people who have this gift inside of them, but my Memaw is one. She may not be perfect either, but I will never be able to see it, because when someone loves you unconditionally all you can do is love them back the same way.
Leah and I believe that our little blessing, Brynn Leigh, is Memaw all over again. She has the small stature, she has the joy, she has the sass, she has the spunk, and she has the love. I talked with Memaw yesterday and said, "If Brynn Leigh grows up to be half of the woman you are I will be blessed beyond mention."
